Our Vision
At Brandling Primary School, the intent of our PE curriculum is to provide an excellent physical education programme for our children to enjoy. We encourage children to adopt a healthy active lifestyle, discover their talents and have a life-long love for various sports and activities. The curriculum programme provides a progressive plan throughout each year group, enabling children to improve their knowledge, confidence and skills across all areas of various sporting activities. Our school principals will positively encourage children to respect, trust and work together. Through our specialist PE lead, the use of external sports coaches with the Gateshead School Sports Partnership (GSSP) and the development of the school staff, we ensure PE is delivered structurally and in line with the National Curriculum, resulting in an effective curriculum implementation.
The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils in Key Stage 1 can:
- Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
- Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
- Perform dances using simple movement patterns
The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils in Key Stage 2 can:
- Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
- Play competitive games, modified where appropriate and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
- Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance
- Perform dances using a range of movement patterns
- Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
- Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
Regarding swimming and water safety, pupils will be taught to:
- Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- Use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke)
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
The curriculum is successfully implemented to ensure that throughout their primary school journey, children will develop, challenge and enhance their skills and attributes. Additionally, we provide our staff with training and resources which supports the development and knowledge of our children. Differentiation is also embedded into all of our PE lessons to enable children to display and develop their skills at an appropriate level and that gifted and talented children are consistently challenged.
We will continue to innovate and adapt how Physical Education, Physical Activity and Mental Health and Well-being will be delivered at Brandling Primary School
